We can’t talk about credit cards without mentioning store branded credit cards, and the good news is, there is for the most part 2 big providers Synchrony Bank & Comenity Bank) that cover most stores and the rest are covered by a few other banks (Capital One, Barclays and even Wells Fargo)

Characteristics of store-branded credit cards can include:

• Accessible to customers with fair or better credit scores (some do not even pull your credit score)
• Chances of approval quite high
• Most often come with no annual fee
• Help improve credit because they report to credit bureaus
• Approval can be instant
• Earn merchant rewards/discounts

Synchrony Store Credit Card Data Points

There are 116 store cards that are run through Synchrony, they are in fact the largest store card provider/underwriter in the US right now.

They predominantly hard pull Transunion and on CLIs they actually use the Credit Karma score engine (aka Vantage 4 score). I would suggest you lock down your Experian account because they have been known to try to hard pull there first before Transunion.

We are hearing that in 2021 several Synchrony cards are starting to pull multiple bureaus for credit approval, most notably the Amazon Prime Store card, and they are pulling Sage Stream now as well. If you have anything frozen they will deny your application and you will have to submit again for another HP.

Comenity Store Credit Card Data Points

Comenity bank is responsible for 91 store cards at the time of writing this, they DO provide pre-qualifications for many of their cards and with some they in fact do not even hard pull your credit file.

Comenity pulls your Experian (sometimes they pull Equifax) credit file and they look for 640+ even though I have heard of all the way into 580s getting approved.

Also keep in mind that some cards that offer a pre-qual and only ask for last 4 of your SSN may in fact still pull a hard inquiry. That is why its best to keep your Experian locked through the pre-qual process and then unlock if you want to actually get a new card.
